Internal Family Systems

A systemic way of working with our internal world

We each have many parts of our personality that are unique and distinct from each other. These parts exist like an inner family inside of us, sometimes getting along well -- sometimes not so much. Parts can show up in many different ways -- behaviors, feelings, belief patterns, thoughts, inner voices, body sensations, imagery, inner people or characters, etc.

Some examples of parts

  • Anxious part

  • Binging and purging parts

  • Inner critic

  • Part that turns to substances to get away from feelings

  • Part that believes "feelings are silly"

  • Part that loves to organize

  • Thinking/analyzing part

  • Skeptical parts

  • "Be a good student" part

  • Part that thinks about suicide

  • Part that makes it hard to talk

  • Part that turn to self-harm

  • A fog that takes over

  • ... and so on!

Whether you are very familiar with your parts are just getting to know them, all parts are welcome here!

Alongside these parts, we have a self-energy that is curious, compassionate, patient, creative, courageous, and has perspective. Because this energy can provide intuition and guidance for how to be with our parts, heal our systems, and be in relationship with those around us, the aim in IFS is to cultivate your access to this energy so that you can better navigate all the systems you exist within. IFS believes that when we are within this energy, we know what we need (and what our society needs) to heal.

But the fact is that sometimes our access to this energy can get blocked due to trauma, attachment wounds, stress, systemic oppression, and so on. This is kind of like how the sun sometimes gets overcast with clouds ... While we may lose sight of it,  the sun is still there beneath those white puffy things.

If all this sounds a little wonky ..... that is totally understandable! Despite "multiplicity of mind" having been around for a long time, our society tends to stigmatize the possibility of this notion. However, if you had even the slightest bit of curiosity bubble up while reading this ... you might be in the right place!
